What is a Drivetrain?

Every vehicle has a drivetrain. It is the system that transfers power from the engine through the transmission and delivers it out to all four wheels. The drivetrain engages the engine, transmission, axles, driveshaft, and wheels, making it a massively important component of the drivability of any vehicle.

Drivetrains have two types: two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Rear-wheel drive and front-wheel drive systems fall under the umbrella of two-wheel drive, while standard four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are covered by the four-wheel drive type. The type of drivetrain an automaker installs on a vehicle depends on how it sees that vehicle being used.
